Discover the Power of Color in Floral Design

It doesn’t matter what medium you think of — color is always a fundamental part of creating art. That’s certainly true of floral design! Our team of designers at Remi + Gold use the fine art principles of color theory to create stunning color combinations that reflect the mood and aesthetic of your wedding in our floral arrangements.

Floral Design & the Color Wheel

Creating a flower color palette starts with color theory and the color wheel, which you may remember from high school art class. The wheel is divided into primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors.

Primary colors:

  • Red

  • Blue

  • Yellow

Tertiary colors:

  • Yellow green

  • Orange yellow

Though there is a lot of nuance in selecting striking colors in floral design, the basic principles are to select colors that are across from each other on the color wheel (complementary colors), next to each other on the wheel (analogous colors), or are shades of the same color on the wheel (monochromatic colors). We also use more advanced color theory principles at Remi + Gold to create certain feelings, like using complementary colors when we want to make a statement, or using analogous colors to soothe the eye.

Color Temperature, Saturation and Value

Once we’ve helped you select your flower color palette, next we’ll consider the temperature, saturation, and value of the colors. Temperature refers to the color’s undertones: blue undertones have a cool temperature and red undertones have a warm temperature. Saturation refers to the brightness or muted look of a color. And value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Selecting the right color for your wedding flowers isn’t enough; we also have to select the right temperature, saturation and value to get the perfect look for your special day.

Symbolism of Colors in Floral Design

Each color can also represent certain emotions or energy, which is a key factor we think about when creating a floral color scheme for your wedding. If your wedding aesthetic is delicate, sweet, and homey, we may choose warm peach, cappuccino, and cream hues. If you’re going for an exotic vibe at your destination wedding, we may choose chartreuse, teal, and clementine shades.

Here are the meanings behind all of the colors that may be included in your wedding flowers:

  • Red symbolizes love, passion, and good fortune

  • Pink symbolizes femininity, romance, and youth

  • Orange symbolizes energy, activity, and fun

  • Yellow symbolizes joy and happiness

  • Green symbolizes growth, health, and prestige

  • Blue symbolizes harmony, tranquility, and calm

  • Purple symbolizes royalty, luxury, and mystery

  • Brown symbolizes strength and wholesomeness

  • White symbolizes purity, simplicity, and perfection

  • Black symbolizes luxury, sophistication, and power
